Virtual Summer Camp
Week 1: July 12 -18
Week 2: July 19-25
Week 3: July 26-August 1
(Any age level can sign up for any or all of the weeks.)

We will not be holding in-person summer camp this year, but we have developed 3 weeks of virtual activities to keep the kids engaged and immersed in nature! Upon registration, you will be emailed a virtual camp “backpack” full of nature activities, including:

– pre-recorded demonstrations of games, crafts, and outdoor activities
– “guided” hikes throughout the Northwest Corner, showing you where to start, what to look for, and the stunning landscapes you’re in for when you hike them!
– meet-and-greet videos with live animals
– Zoom links to live, interactive programs, allowing us all to learn and socialize with each other
– pre-recorded storytime sessions

You can sign up to receive materials for one, two, or all three weeks of virtual camp. Each week will include a unique set of activities; you’ll see activities that will suit younger kids, older kids, and entire families. You will receive an email from carrie@whitememorialcc.org on the Friday before each camp week starts with links for all of the pre-recorded activities and demonstrations, as well as Zoom links for a couple of live interactive presentations taking place during the camp week.

Click on the green “Tickets” button on this page to register.

Cost:
– Virtual Summer Camp is FREE for members! But, you still must pre-register to receive your virtual camp “backpacks” via email.
– For non-members, each week is a flat rate of $60, no matter how many kids will be participating in your family.*
* To get the best bang for your buck, Click HERE to join White Memorial with a family membership, which is also $60. Doing this will give you BOTH the benefits of membership AND free access to summer camp materials (all 3 weeks if you so choose!). Once you become a Family Member, please COME BACK to this page to register for summer camp.

Animal Adaptations with Gerri Griswold

Saturday, August 1, 2020

2:00 p.m.

ZOOM

Why is a vulture’s head bald? Why are porcupines so slow? Why does an Opossum play possum? These and answers to your many other questions will be revealed in an hour long program. Animal Adaptations uses natural props, animal mounts, and a couple of surprise guests to illustrate the definitions of both structural and behavioral adaptations, and how adaptations help animals survive in different environments. Participants will be able to guess how certain “mystery props” could be used as adaptations for animals. This is a great program for kids and adults! 2:00 p.m. This free virtual program will be hosted in Zoom and simulcast on “The White Memorial Conservation Center” Facebook page via Facebook Live!

The Navel of the World: An Exploration of Easter Island

Saturday, August 8, 2020

2:00 p.m.

ZOOM

In sixth grade Gerri Griswold read Norwegian explorer Thor Hyerdahl’s “Kon Tiki”. It never left her system. Griswold finally answered the calling in October 2017 by celebrating her 60th birthday on the world’s most remotely populated island with her good friend and travel obsessed colleague, Liz Frazier – Zygmont. Most people venture out to this tiny volcanic rock perched at the very edge of French Polynesia for two or three days. After seven days Frazier- Zygmont and Griswold concurred that Easter Island’s dazzling facets are so abundant that two weeks should be the minimum excursion. Spend some time reliving their remarkable journey. You’ll not only see some pretty amazing photographs but learn that Isla de Pascua, Easter Island, Rapa Nui is much more than the Moai statues which define it for so many. 2:00 p.m, This free virtual program will be hosted in Zoom and simulcast on “The White Memorial Conservation Center” Facebook page via Facebook Live!
