Nevermore: Remembering the Passenger Pigeon with Gerri Griswold

Saturday, October 17, 2020 (please note, this is a change to the original date of Oct. 24)

2013 marked the 100th anniversary of the extinction of the passenger pigeon. Here at White Memorial, we actually have our own passenger pigeon mount, although it has yet to be put on display. During this memorial program, get the rare chance to see our beautiful specimen up close, as well as hear the story of a bird that once obscured “the light of noon-day” in abundance, but met its demise at the hand of humans in less than a century. 2:00 p.m. on ZOOM and Facebook Live! FREE. Please pre-register:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VfUZR1Z0SgCDxb9lu7Tmbg

The Beauty of Clouds with Tom Alena

Saturday, October 24, 2020 (please note, this is a change to the original date of Oct. 17)

Clouds, what are they and what goes on inside of them to make rain and snow?  For most of humanity, no one really knew. In fact, as late as the 1800’s they were described as “entities” in literature.  This vague definition allowed for many myths to be created around them. No doubt that clouds had something to do with water, but the link between groundwater and rain wasn’t clear (no pun intended).

This program reveals the history of cloud observation, their use as weather forecasting tools, and the science of how they form precipitation.  We will go over cloud naming and the man behind the “cumulus” description.  Utilizing the latest satellite technology , we will look at how clouds play a vital role in climate change scenarios.  You’ll never look at a cloud the same way again. 3:00 p.m. on ZOOM.  Members: FREE, Non-members: $10.00.  Please pre-register www.whitememorialcc.org You will receive an email with the Zoom link to the program.
