Pandemic Pantry ~ Homage to the Apple

Saturday, January 9, 2021

Human beings have been munching apples since prehistoric times. They spar out apple pips in Neolithic Britain. And 10,000 years ago they left apple remains to carbonize around their Swiss and Italian lakeside homes. In Switzerland and in the regions adjoining the Caucasus mountains, ancient humans even appear to have dry-stored apple-halves for winter. But these were wild crab apples, tiny wizened fruit which, in Ancient Britain, came to be known as ‘wildings’. They had little in common with the apples we know today. Today, the Pandemc Pantry celebrates this glorious fruit with 5 preparations ~ Curried Butternut Squash and Apple Soup, a heavenly Chicken Salad with Apples, Plumped raisins, and Toasted Pecans, a classic French recipe, Poulet a la Normande, Raw Apple Muffins, and Houlihan Applesauce Cake. YUM YUM YUM! 12:00 p.m., ZOOM and Facebook Live!, FREE, Register:

Stories That Snowflakes Tell with Tom Alena

Saturday, January 9, 2021

Every snowflake is created with almost miraculous precision inside the clouds above us! Their final shape as they land on your coat or tongue is a result of complex temperature and moisture patterns they encounter on their journey to the ground. This program details how the snow crystal forms in the air above us and why it takes on the variety of shapes we observe. You’ll learn how to capture and photograph snow crystals and have tons of fun cutting out actual paper models of real snow crystals.
Don’t stay inside on this winter day. Join us for this informative seasonal program. 3:00 p.m., ZOOM, Members: FREE, Non-Members: $10.00 Pre-registration is required: www.whitememorialcc.org A link will be emailed to you on January 8..

Animals in Medicine and Magic in Ancient Egypt with Dr. Sofia Aziz

Animals in Medicine and Magic in Ancient Egypt with Dr. Sofia Aziz

Saturday, January 16, 2021

(How the evolution of animal cults and deities was influenced by the emergence of rudimentary Biomedical Science and Pharmacology in Ancient Egypt)

Veterinary medicine in ancient Egypt probably formed side by side with human medicine. Domesticating animals created a symbiotic relationship in which humans and animals became codependent. Evidence suggests that the rudiments of biomedical science were gleaned from observing animal dissections through ritual sacrificing. Animal deities emerged which were invoked to assist in the well being of humans. Some of the vast pharmacopeia and medical remedies of the ancient Egyptians could have been developed by observing animals self medicate in the wild.

About Our Speaker ~  Sofia Aziz is a Biomedical Egyptologist and Published Writer. Her areas of expertise are: Medicine and Magic in ancient Egypt, Mummification processes both anthropogenic and natural, and health and disease of ancient populations. She has appeared in a number of documentaries including Egypt’s Unexplained Files on the Science Channel in the US and the History Channel in the UK. 2:00 p.m. ZOOM Members: FREE  Non-members: $10.00 Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Those negative stigmas are replaced by fascination. You’ll meet a few native creatures up-close, such as a snake and a salamander, and you’ll even hear tips on how you can be a hero to these “unhuggables.” 2pm.
