Rock Around the Ring Road with Tom Alena and Gerri Griswold

Rock Around the Ring Road with Tom Alena and Gerri Griswold

Saturday, June 26, 2021

This program is made possible through the generosity of Chris and Peg Jones.

Tom and Gerri have collaborated three times escorting well-mannered adults who behave like children, around Iceland’s Ring Road. Along the way, Alena interprets geology while Griswold controls the candy bag. Route 1 or the Ring Road, runs around the island and connects most of the inhabited parts of the country. The total length of the road is 821 miles. Some of Iceland’s most significant geosites (including waterfalls, glaciers, and black sand beaches) are found on or just off the Ring Road. The road was completed in 1974, coinciding with the 1,100th anniversary of Iceland’s settlement. Join Tom and Gerri as they take a geological trip down memory lane recapping their tours in 2012, 2015, and 2017. 3:00 p.m., ZOOM, Members: FREE, Non-Members: $10.00. Pre-registration is required: www.whitememorialcc.org

Meeting with Monsters ~ A Guide to the Beasts of Iceland with Jón Baldur Hlíðberg
Jul 10 @ 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Saturday, July 10, 2021

Icelandic folklore heritage contains a wealth of tales about weird animals and ferocious monsters. These creatures terrified Icelanders in prior centuries but have hardly been noticed recently, at least for the most part. The main folk legends and stories of these monsters from in or around Iceland are recounted from both oral and written sources. The monsters and their peculiarities are described in detail and the locations where they have been spotted are shown on a map. Jon’s illustrations shed additional light on this interesting part of Icelandic folklore.

About our speaker: Jón Baldur Hlíðberg is the Father of Nature Illustration in Iceland. His website, www.fauna.is is a database for over 2000 of his works. Jon’s work has appeared in many books, periodicals, posters, and is ubiquitous throughout Iceland. In 2019 he accomplished the unthinkable, a book, Flóra Íslands  was published featuring paintings of every plant in Iceland. The paintings took a decade to complete. The book was celebrated by the nation and received its highest awards. 2:00 p.m., ZOOM, Members: FREE, Non-Members: $10.00, Pre-registration is required: www.whitememorialcc.org A link to the program will be emailed to you the day before the program.
