Hurricanes with Tom Alena

Saturday, September 18, 2021

As we near the peak of hurricane season in the northern hemisphere, learn why Connecticut is so susceptible to these tropical storms.  We’ll examine the weather conditions that steer these beasts up the coasts, and what to look for on the forecast maps that help block their approach.  Why isn’t California and the West Coast prone to hurricanes? Understanding the hurricane’s formation and what steers them, helps us to understand what places are vulnerable.  We’ll also be introduced to some original activities that will excite children’s interest in learning about these storms.3:00 p.m., ZOOM, Members: FREE, Non-members: $10.00. Pre-register at www.whitememorialcc.org. A link to the presentation will arrive via email when you register (check junk mail!).

Carnivorous Plants with Stewart McPherson

Saturday, October 2, 2021

What an honor it is for the Conservation Center to bring (virtually) to you, one of the world’s foremost experts on carnivorous plants! Stewart McPherson graduated in geography at the University of Durham in England, studied briefly at the University of Tübingen in Germany, and Yale University. In 2006 he founded Redfern Natural History Productions in Poole, Dorset to conduct natural history research, publishing, filming and eco-tours.

McPherson is the author of around 20 volumes published by his own company and concerned with natural history, largely focusing on carnivorous plants. He has co-discovered a number of species (including the much publicized Nepenthes  attenboroughii) and has formally described around 35 carnivorous plant taxa.

He is a member of the IUCN SSC Carnivorous Plant Specialist Group. He documented each species in full detail in its natural habitat, taking seven years with many expeditions in the tropics of Southeast Asia, Africa and South America. Over time, he has transitioned into TV presenter and natural history writer.

Stewart founded “Ark of Life” http://arkoflife.net/   to conserve species on the brink of extinction, initially carnivorous plant groups. Just look at how prolific this man is! Does he even sleep? https://www.redfernnaturalhistory.com/

2:00 p.m., ZOOM, Members: FREE  Non Members: $10.00 Pre-register here: www.whitememorialcc.org
