In the words of Kristi, “If you are looking for a walk where the leader gives you all of the answers, this is probably not for you. If, on the other hand, you are ready to learn how to distinguish and deeply connect with what you are seeing and hearing, then please join us!”
The walks will average about 2 hours, but feel free to head out whenever you need to. Open to all experience levels. Dress for the weather! Will take place rain or shine! 8:00 – 10:00 a.m., Meet in front of the A. B. Ceder Room. FREE…Donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center’s programming expenses.

The dawn chorus occurs when birds sing at the start of a new day. In a given location, it is common for different species to do their dawn singing at different times. Of course…in order to experience this incredible performance you must be up before the birds! Join The Bird Whisperer, Fran Zygmont as he and early bird Gerri Griswold take you to some favorite birding haunts just before the crack o’ dawn. Breakfast at Patty’s afterwards! 4:00 a.m., Meet in front of the A. B. Ceder Room. Please pre-register for this program by calling 860-567-0857 or register online. Members: FREE, Non-members: $5.00

White Memorial Conservation Center has been a longtime partner with The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) and the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) and has hosted many early plantings for both organizations. Dr. Arthur Graves planted the first chestnut orchard on White Memorial’s property in 1944. Come to hear a presentation of the current status of the American chestnut and TACF’s efforts to restore this iconic species by Jack Swatt, current president of the Connecticut chapter. After the presentation we will walk to the nearby TACF and CAES plantings from 1995-1997 and search some of the nearby trails to hopefully find remnant American chestnut sprouts still growing in their forests. Bring plenty of drinking water and appropriate footwear.
Jack Swatt has been a member of The American Chestnut Foundation since 1993. He received a B.S. in Biological Sciences from UConn in 1983, an M.S. in Chemistry from CCSU in 1992 and graduated from the Albany Medical College Physician Assistant Program in 1996. He currently is employed by The Hospital of Central Connecticut as a Physician Assistant in Hospitalist Medicine. Jack has planted several Restoration Chestnuts on his property in Wolcott, CT and monitors several native American Chestnut trees found in Naugatuck State Forest. He is also an active volunteer for the Wolcott Fire Dept. Co. #2, CT DEEP (monitoring wintering eagles and Whip-poor-wills), Audubon CT, CT Audubon, NH Audubon, the Loon Preservation Committee and the Society to Protect New Hampshire Forests (aka the Forest Society).
