Duende: The Works of Sarah Kushwara: Art Show Opening

Friday, July 12, 2019

Duende is a term usually associated with flamenco music to describe a heightened state of passion and inspiration, an emotion which can hardly be contained by the roaring spirit that is the clash and fireworks of improvisational dancing and song; the term originally derives from a goblin creature in Spanish and Latin American folklore.

Sarah Kushwara paints, photographs,  draws, and creates prints with a variety of eclectic and electric subjects, often inspired by her travels and unique insights into the world of spirits and magical entities beyond and yet within our own. Some of the work you will witness and take part in was stolen from glimpses of her old residences in: Turkey, Bolivia, and India, while others contain a parallel universe in which she invites you to take a dip, stormy seas of the imagination, daydreams coated in reminiscence, goblins of passion seething with insights, and fascinations of new territories. Life isn’t always grand but art can make it grand, and Kushwara invites you to experience these little dreadful miracles, these glimpses into otherworldly beauties, because painting can both bring back what has been lost and call forward an invite future brimming with the obsolete, the absolute, and the impossible.

The show runs through September 30. 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., A. B. Ceder Room, The opening is free to the public but you must pre-register by calling 860-567-0857 or by registering online: www.whitememorialcc.org
