SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Range Expansion of Native and Invasive Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases\, and Ensuing Public Health Challenges with Dr. Goudarz Molaei
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 23\, 2026 \nIncreasing incidence of tick-borne diseases poses a critical public health threat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\, reported cases of Lyme disease in the United States (U.S.) have increased from 16\,461 (incidence 6.11) in 1996 to 89\,470 (incidence 26.94) in 2023\, indicating an over five-fold and four-fold increase in the average number of cases and incidence (cases per 100\,000 population)\, respectively. However\, recent estimates suggest that approximately 476\,000 people may be diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year in the U.S. Connecticut is among the top 10 states with the highest Lyme disease cases\, reporting 37\,949 cases from 2008 to 2023\, and had the 10th highest incidence of 89.9 in 2023. In this lecture\, the current status of ticks and tick-borne diseases in the U.S. and Connecticut and measures to prevent tick bites will be discussed. Our presenter will be Goudarz Molaei\, Ph.D.\, a full research scientist and medical entomologist\, director of the Passive Tick and Tick-borne Disease Surveillance Program\, and an associate professor adjunct at the Yale School of Public Health. 6:00 p.m.\, A. He is also an associate professor adjunct at the Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases\, Yale School of Public Health; a member of the leadership team at the Northeast Regional Center for Excellence in Vector-borne Diseases\, established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2016; a leadership team member at the Northeast Regional Center for Training and Evaluation in Vector-borne Diseases\, established by CDC in 2023; a member of the Stakeholders Advisory Committee for the New England Regional Center for Excellence in Vector-borne Diseases\, established by CDC in 2023; and the lead for vector-borne diseases subcommittee for the Connecticut Governor’s Council on Climate Change-Public Health and Safety Working Group; an editorial board member for the Journal of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases; and a member of the Multi-State Research Project NE-1443: Biology\, Ecology\, and Management of Emerging Disease Vectors. Dr. Molaei’s research focus is on the ecology and biology of mosquitoes and ticks and their respective roles in the enzootic and epidemic transmission of vector-borne diseases at the CAES Center for Vector Biology & Zoonotic Diseases. He has published numerous articles in highly regarded peer-reviewed journals\, including the New England Journal of Medicine\, Emerging Infectious Diseases\,Journal of Infectious Diseases\, and PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. His research findings have been reported by the Associated Press and many other news agencies and recognized as one of the Top 100 Science Discoveries by Discover Magazine.

We’ll have a slumber party amongst the exhibits in the Museum. Plus\, we’ll embark on a night hike\, gather around the campfire\, make special crafts\, explore Ongley Pond\, and so much more. You’ll also be treated to breakfast and a special program featuring live animals. Parents\, this is a drop-off program\, but plenty of adult chaperones from the WMCC Education and Activities Committee will be there. Meet in the Museum. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 2\, 2026 \nNot all who wander are lost—some are artists! Join us as we wander the trails with sketchbooks in hand. Along the way\, we’ll pause to draw whatever catches our eye: crooked trees\, tiny flowers\, interesting textures\, animal tracks\, or moments of quiet beauty. You don’t need to “know how to draw”—just bring curiosity. This program is about slowing down\, noticing the small things\, and letting nature be your guide. Sketching becomes a way to explore\, wonder\, and see the world a little differently. We will supply sketchbooks\, pencils\, and charcoal\, but feel free to bring any other supplies you wish. All experience levels are welcome. For Ages 10 and up. \n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Meet in the A.B. Ceder Room. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 14\, 2026 \nLuncheon and Talk / America 250 Presentation \nJames Fischer\, Research Director of The White Mountain Memorial Conservation Center\, carried grist to my metaphorical mill when sending me his manuscript “Geology as Destiny?” My job in this presentation is to grind that grist into the bread of Litchfield history\, following the example Robert Gross and I set for our article “Why Concord?” published recently in a special issue of The Atlantic titled The Unfinished Revolution.  During my talk\, I hope to sway you to the realization that social history is the tail on the dog of Earth history.  Fischer was convinced\, having written:”Litchfield’s history\, like Concord’s\, is not simply something that happened on the landscape. — it is something that emerged from it.” And also: “The value of reading Litchfield though Gross and Thorson’s lens is not to reduce culture to geology\, but to restore continuity between the town’s celebrated stories and the grounded conditions that made them possible.” I love his word “restore” because the citizens of Litchfield during the “Age of Homespun” understood this continuity far more than most of us in the age of AI. \nThis will be a mixed-media oral presentation with slides\, readings\, demonstrations\, discussion\, and Q&A.  Points of interest will be the Litchfield’s varied terrain\, rock ledges\, erratic boulders\, streamlined hills\, hardscrabble pastures\, wetland pastures\, stone walls\, streams\, mill seats\, aquifers\, Bantam Lake\, and other ponds.  One specific point of special interest will be a beautiful slab of Litchfield rock that records eight events in deep time. \n1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.\, Carriage House\, Lunch included. Thorson (Thor)  is a Midwestern native\, turned Northwestern geologist\, turned Northeastern academic.  Currently\, he’s a Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Connecticut with a research focus on the link between New England’s landscape\, archaeology\, history\, ecology\, and literature. His work as an author includes The Walden Experiments\, upcoming from Princeton University Press and seven previous books\, one of which\, Stone by Stone\, won the Connecticut Book Award for nonfiction\, remains a regional bestseller\, and is now available in audio. \nHis work as a journalist was recently featured by the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\,  The Atlantic\, and Smithsonian. He’s also a talking head for a three-part Ken Burns-PBS reframing of Henry David Thoreau that will air nationwide on March 30-31. This is his fifth appearance in Litchfield for conservation-minded audiences since 2003.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area\, Michael began his higher education studies in music at Diablo Valley Community College\, ultimately transferring to California State University\, East Bay where he earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music. Michael is also a graduate of The Hartt School at the University of Hartford with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Composition and a minor in Music Theory. \nMichael’s interests outside of music include animals (especially exotic reptiles)\, reading\, hiking\, cooking\, the San Francisco Giants and 49ers\, and coffee.
