SUMMARY:Artistry in Nature with Colleen Harrak
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 11\, 2026 \nNot all who wander are lost—some are artists! Join us as we wander the trails with sketchbooks in hand. Along the way\, we’ll pause to draw whatever catches our eye: crooked trees\, tiny flowers\, interesting textures\, animal tracks\, or moments of quiet beauty. You don’t need to “know how to draw”—just bring curiosity. This program is about slowing down\, noticing the small things\, and letting nature be your guide. Sketching becomes a way to explore\, wonder\, and see the world a little differently. We will supply sketchbooks\, pencils\, and charcoal\, but feel free to bring any other supplies you wish. All experience levels are welcome. For Ages 10 and up. \n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Meet in the A.B. Ceder Room. At times\, we may travel as a group in our 15-passenger van to White Memorials locations outside the Main Area. Advanced registration is required.  You can sign up by session or\, for a discounted rate\, the whole series. Other sessions take place on May 2 and June 13. Members: $20/person per session or $50/whole series\, Non-Members: $30/person per session or $80/whole series   \n\nRegister here: Artistry in Nature Registration

SUMMARY:The Mighty Oak and Its Companions with Marilyn Singer and Jonathan Chesler
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 11\, 2026 \nFor ages 4 – 10 \nDid you know that some species are so important that without them entire ecosystems would fall apart? \nThey’re called “keystone species.”  Some of them\, such as starfish\, wolves\, sea otters\, and beavers\, are animals.  But\, believe it or not\, others are plants! \nOne keystone plant found all around the world and right here in Connecticut is the oak. \nAward-winning children’s author Marilyn Singer became so fascinated with this fact that she wrote a picture book featuring poems and prose entitled Whose Tree Is This?  The Mighty Oak and Its Companions\, illustrated by Julian Plum. Join Marilyn and Jonathan Chesler\, owner of Four Springs Landscape and Garden\, for a reading and discussion about what makes an oak an oak\, why it’s a keystone species\, and what creatures rely on it. \nBooks will be on sale afterwards.  And we’ll take a walk to visit some of White Memorial’s mighty oaks! 2:00 p.m.\, A. B. Ceder Room\, FREE..Donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center’s programming expenses. \nPlease register here: Mighty Oak Registration \n  \nAbout our presenters: \n \nMarilyn Singer: \nWinner of the 2015 National Council of Teachers of English award for Excellence in Poetry\, Marilyn Singer has written more than 130 books in many genres\, including novels\, picture books\, nonfiction\, short stories\, and\, especially poetry.  She began writing poems in third grade and hasn’t stopped since. \nShe and her husband live in Brooklyn\, NY and Washington\, CT\, with a standard poodle\, a cat\, and a dove.  They are enthusiastic bird-watchers\, gardeners\, and swing dancers.  Visit her web site:  www.marilynsinger.net. \n \nJonathan Chesler: \nTrained in technical theater with an MFA from the University of Connecticut\, Jonathan Chesler has transferred much of that knowledge to landscape design.  A 2013 UConn Master Gardener\, he worked at several nurseries and landscaping businesses before starting his own company\, Four Springs Landscape and Garden\, in 2016. \nHe is currently the president of Mad Gardeners\, an organization that promotes the science and art of gardening.  In his spare time\, he’s an avid reader\, a good baker\, and he occasionally works in his own yard.

SUMMARY:STAR PARTY!!!!
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 17\, 2026 \nThis month’s talk topic is “Astronomy 001 – how the sky works”. Ever look at the sky and wonder why the stars rise in the East and set in the West?  For that matter\, why does the Sun rise in the East?  Why not the North\, or the West?  Why are there seasons? What’s an equinox\, anyway? Why is the Sun higher in the summer than in the winter?  This talk answers these and other questions. No prior knowledge of astronomy is required – just curiosity. \nStar parties at White Memorial are organized by the Litchfield Hills Amateur Astronomy Club.  The talk will be given whether it’s clear or cloudy.  Weather permitting\, there will be star gazing after the program at the observatory.  You are welcome to bring a telescope or binoculars.  Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. 8:00 p.m. A. B. Ceder Room \n  \nFREE… Donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center’s programming expenses.

SUMMARY:Give Local!
DESCRIPTION:April 21 and 22\, 2026 \nHosted by the Connecticut Community Foundation\, Give Local Greater Waterbury & Litchfield Hills is a 36-hour online community giving event that encourages donors to lend their support to the nonprofit organizations that work every day to make our community stronger. \nEvery dollar donated to the Conservation Center from 7 a.m. on April 21 to 7 p.m. on April 22 will support the building of our brand new aviary! \nA powerful part of White Memorial’s educational mission quite literally takes flight on the wings of our Avian Ambassadors. \nAt White Memorial Conservation Center\, two remarkable non-releasable birds of prey help us connect thousands of visitors each year to the wonder of the natural world: Zelda\, our Barred Owl\, and Irie\, our Red-tailed Hawk. Through them\, children experience their first close look at a raptor. Adults rediscover awe. Conversations about conservation become personal\, powerful\, and lasting. \nIf you’ve visited Zelda and Irie in their aviary just outside the Museum\, you’ve seen how special they are. \nBut their current home is not. \nBuilt in the 1990s\, the existing aviary is worn\, outdated\, and in urgent need of complete replacement. It no longer reflects the level of care\, respect\, and excellence these birds deserve — nor does it meet the evolving needs of the dedicated staff and volunteers who provide their daily care. \nOur Avian Ambassadors deserve more than adequate. They deserve extraordinary. \nWe have a new\, thoughtfully designed\, state-of-the-art aviary plan ready to go — one that will provide: \n\nEnhanced safety and security\nEnrichment features that support natural behaviors\nProper landscaping for a more natural habitat\nRunning water and electricity for optimal care\nSafe\, accessible space for staff and volunteers\nRoom to welcome a future Avian Ambassador\n\nThanks to the generosity of a major lead sponsor\, we are already partway there. But constructing a modern aviary — built to the highest standards — requires significant resources. \nYour gift to Give Local 2026 will help transform this vision into reality. \nWith your support\, we hope to break ground in 2026 and give Zelda and Irie the home they truly deserve — while creating a new space that will inspire generations to come. \nEvery gift matters. No donation is too small.Together\, we can build a future where conservation education continues to soar. \nThank you for helping our mission take flight. \nWatch our website www.whitememorialcc.org or read your Habitattler for more details on how you can donate or visit our personal Give Local page https://www.givelocalccf.org/organizations/white-memorial-conservation-center

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 23\, 2026 \nWE ARE NOW ONLY ACCEPTING VIRTUAL ATTENDEES! IN PERSON SPACE IS FULL! \nIncreasing incidence of tick-borne diseases poses a critical public health threat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\, reported cases of Lyme disease in the United States (U.S.) have increased from 16\,461 (incidence 6.11) in 1996 to 89\,470 (incidence 26.94) in 2023\, indicating an over five-fold and four-fold increase in the average number of cases and incidence (cases per 100\,000 population)\, respectively. However\, recent estimates suggest that approximately 476\,000 people may be diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year in the U.S. Connecticut is among the top 10 states with the highest Lyme disease cases\, reporting 37\,949 cases from 2008 to 2023\, and had the 10th highest incidence of 89.9 in 2023. In this lecture\, the current status of ticks and tick-borne diseases in the U.S. and Connecticut and measures to prevent tick bites will be discussed. Our presenter will be Goudarz Molaei\, Ph.D.\, a full research scientist and medical entomologist\, director of the Passive Tick and Tick-borne Disease Surveillance Program\, and an associate professor adjunct at the Yale School of Public Health. 6:00 p.m Microsoft Teams\, FREE…Donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center’s programming expenses. \nA TEAMS link will be emailed with registration receipt. \nPlease pre-register: Tick Registration \nWE ARE NOW ONLY ACCEPTING VIRTUAL ATTENDEES! SUMMARY:Artistry in Nature with Colleen Harrak
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 2\, 2026 \nNot all who wander are lost—some are artists!

SUMMARY:Charles Darwin: History’s Most Famous Biologist with Stewart McPherson
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 2\, 2026 \nCharles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) transformed the way we understand the natural world with ideas that\, in his day\, were nothing short of revolutionary. \nHe and his fellow pioneers in the field of biology gave us insight into the fantastic diversity of life on Earth and its origins\, including our own as a species. \nJoin British Explorer and Darwin Scholar\, Stewart McPherson for a deep dive into the life and times of this astonishing man. \nIn 2025\, McPherson completed an epic two year journey following the path of the HMS Beagle on the Dutch schooner\, Oosterschelde with a group of young citizen scientists\, the next generation of conservationists. DARWIN200 followed Charles Darwin’s journey aboard HMS Beagle two centuries ago. \nThe schooner was used as a floating laboratory and media platform to harness the legacy of Charles Darwin’s passion for natural history to engage worldwide audiences and advance global conservation. \nIf you have ever been interested in Charles Darwin\, here is an extraordinary opportunity to hear his story from the ultimate Darwin Scholar! Reception in the Museum: 6pm\, Talk in the Ceder Room: 7:00 p.m.. \nPlease pre-register: Charles Darwin Registration \nFREE…donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center’s programming expenses.

SUMMARY:"Why Litchfield? Grounding Town History to the Land Itself" Luncheon and Talk with Dr. Robert Thorson
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 14\, 2026 \nLuncheon and Talk / America 250 Presentation \nJames Fischer\, Research Director of The White Mountain Memorial Conservation Center\, carried grist to my metaphorical mill when sending me his manuscript “Geology as Destiny?” My job in this presentation is to grind that grist into the bread of Litchfield history\, following the example Robert Gross and I set for our article “Why Concord?” published recently in a special issue of The Atlantic titled The Unfinished Revolution.  During my talk\, I hope to sway you to the realization that social history is the tail on the dog of Earth history.  Fischer was convinced\, having written:”Litchfield’s history\, like Concord’s\, is not simply something that happened on the landscape. — it is something that emerged from it.” And also: “The value of reading Litchfield though Gross and Thorson’s lens is not to reduce culture to geology\, but to restore continuity between the town’s celebrated stories and the grounded conditions that made them possible.” I love his word “restore” because the citizens of Litchfield during the “Age of Homespun” understood this continuity far more than most of us in the age of AI. \nThis will be a mixed-media oral presentation with slides\, readings\, demonstrations\, discussion\, and Q&A.  Points of interest will be the Litchfield’s varied terrain\, rock ledges\, erratic boulders\, streamlined hills\, hardscrabble pastures\, wetland pastures\, stone walls\, streams\, mill seats\, aquifers\, Bantam Lake\, and other ponds.  One specific point of special interest will be a beautiful slab of Litchfield rock that records eight events in deep time. \n1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.\, Carriage House\, Lunch included. All tickets:$25    You must pre-register online HERE. \nThis program is presented as part of America’s 250th in Litchfield\, CT! \nLINKS \nThe Land – Ten mini-essays from Connecticut Magazine – “The Hills” describes Litchfield. \nShape of Storrs – A cover essay for UConn Today featuring the landform and soil that made Litchfield such a productive agricultural town. \nStone Wall Science – Essay in The Conversation with multiple links. \nOrigin of Stone Walls  – Audio segment on NPR’s Academic Minute \nStone by Stone – Award-winning nonfiction book by Bloomsbury on Stone Walls \nSignature Landform – Award-winning Smithsonian essay on New England’s stone walls. \nStone Wall Initiative – All-purpose information website at UConn. \nAbout Our Speaker: \nRobert M. Thorson (Thor)  is a Midwestern native\, turned Northwestern geologist\, turned Northeastern academic.  Currently\, he’s a Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Connecticut with a research focus on the link between New England’s landscape\, archaeology\, history\, ecology\, and literature. His work as an author includes The Walden Experiments\, upcoming from Princeton University Press and seven previous books\, one of which\, Stone by Stone\, won the Connecticut Book Award for nonfiction\, remains a regional bestseller\, and is now available in audio. \nHis work as a journalist was recently featured by the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\,  The Atlantic\, and Smithsonian. He’s also a talking head for a three-part Ken Burns-PBS reframing of Henry David Thoreau that will air nationwide on March 30-31. This is his fifth appearance in Litchfield for conservation-minded audiences since 2003.
