SUMMARY:Ashes of Industry: 19th Century Charcoal Production in Northwestern Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 22\, 2026 \nLUNCH INCLUDED! \nWhile hiking along the trails in Northwest Connecticut\, hikers occasionally come across large raised circular mounds that appear odd and out of place. These 40-foot wide circles are the remains of charcoal hearths on which colliers burned logs to create charcoal used to power Connecticut’s nineteenth century iron\, steel\, and brass industries. At that time\, Connecticut’s forests would have looked far different after its hills were stripped of trees and wood piled to make charcoal. Charcoal burners\, called colliers\, arranged the cut wood into particular patterns up to fifteen feet tall\, covered the logs with leaves and dirt\, and then set fire to the mound so that the wood would bake. After ten to fourteen days\, the resultant charcoal was raked out\, cooled\, and transported by carts along charcoal roads to industrial buyers.\nThe remains of thousands of old charcoal hearths have been located in Litchfield County and bordering towns. Each hearth contained small remnants of 100 – 150-year-old charcoal. Evidence of collier’s shelters and cooking hearths has also been found. \nStonewalls and charcoal hearths are considered archaeological artifacts of past agricultural\, industrial and forestry history\, but unlike stonewalls\, few people are aware of charcoal hearths. \nLocal historians Peter and Barbara Rzasa will provide a PowerPoint presentation describing the history of local charcoal production in Northwest Connecticut including White Memorial. Learn who built the old hearths\, what the charcoal was used for and how charcoal hearths can be found today. Tales of the local colliers will be shared. Samples of 150-year old charcoal will be brought for viewing. \nAbout the Rzasas: Peter Rzasa earned his B.S. degree in Forest Chemistry from S.U.N.Y. College of Environmental Science. Barbara obtained a B.S degree in art from Southern Connecticut State University and is a retired graphic designer who uses her artistic skills to create nature-based watercolor paintings. The Rzasas’ goal is to encourage people\, especially children\, to look more closely at our natural and historical world and to become more aware of its hidden wonders. \n1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Carriage House\, LUNCHEON INCLUDED!\, All tickets: $25.00\, \nPlease pre-register: Ashes of Industry Registration Registration closes October 19. \nThis program is presented as part of America’s 250th in Litchfield\, CT

SUMMARY:Shade Swamp Sanctuary Hike with CT DEEP Habitat Biologist Peter Picone and Gerri Griswold
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 31\, 2026 \nJoin Peter Picone and Gerri Griswold for an unusual hike around one of the most intriguing gifts of land once owned by Alain and May White.  Shade Swamp was gifted to the State of Connecticut in 1934. This 500-acre parcel was dedicated to the protection and propagation of a variety of birds and mammals including foxes\, porcupines\, owls\, hawks\, skunks\, opossums and more. Locals often referred to it as the “Farmington Zoo.” The parcel is also known for its wide variety of habitats. The Sanctuary was one of the major means by which the public could be acquainted with the work done by the State Board of Fisheries and Game (now the CT DEEP.) \n\nThere are two trail systems on this hike (total about 3.5 miles)\nThe Blue Trail (The Abandoned Zoo)\n\n\n\n\nDistance: 1.1 to 1.5-mile loop\nHighlights: This trail features the eerie remains of the zoo. Dozens of intact rusted iron cages\, concrete animal pens\, and stone dens line the path.\nLocation: Located on the east side of New Britain Avenue.\n\n\nThe White Trail\n\nDistance: 1.8 to 2.5-mile loop\nHighlights: A quieter\, highly level walk through a mature Connecticut forest. It passes the decommissioned DEEP headquarters.\nLocation: Located on the west side of New Britain Avenue.\n\n\n\nWear sturdy weatherproof shoes and clothing\, and bring a hiking stick.  10:00 a.m.\, Meet at the parking area at Shade Swamp Preserve: 175 Scott Swamp Road\, Farmington\, CT. We’ll tackle the Blue Trail first. Please pre-register: Shade Swamp Registration \nFree…Donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center’s programming expenses. \n
