The Lost World Mountains of Venezuela with Stewart McPherson
January 8, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Gigantic plateaus, over 3000 feet high, are home to rare carnivorous plants. It is difficult to imagine and appreciate how massive these table top mountains are. Today we’ll hear the story of exploration, wildlife, landscape and amazing spectacles these lost worlds possess. How and when were they discovered? British Naturalist, Stewart McPherson has explored 25 of our planet’s 100 plateaus. Today Stewart focuses on the Guiana Highlands: Suriname, Guyana, French Guyana and Venezuela. The area also covers the north of Brazil, east Columbia, but Venezuela is the most significant. We may never have the opportunity to visit these giants. Having Stewart here is the next best thing!
McPherson is the author of around 20 volumes published by his own company and concerned with natural history, largely focusing on carnivorous plants. He has co-discovered a number of species (including the much publicized Nepenthes attenboroughii) and has formally described around 35 carnivorous plant taxa.
He is a member of the IUCN SSC Carnivorous Plant Specialist Group. He documented each species in full detail in its natural habitat, taking seven years with many expeditions in the tropics of Southeast Asia, Africa and South America. Over time, he has transitioned into TV presenter and natural history writer.
Stewart founded “Ark of Life” http://arkoflife.net/ to conserve species on the brink of extinction, initially carnivorous plant groups. Just look at how prolific this man is! Does he even sleep? https://www.redfernnaturalhistory.com/
