Hosted by the Connecticut Community Foundation, Give Local Greater Waterbury & Litchfield Hills is a 36-hour online community giving event that encourages donors to lend their support to the nonprofit organizations that work every day to make our community stronger.
Every dollar donated to the Conservation Center from 7 a.m. on April 29 to 7 p.m. on April 30 will support four very important components of our Mission!
ANIMAL CARE:
EVERYONE loves animals! White Memorial is home to a variety of Animal Ambassadors that delight audiences near and far throughout the year. From Rocky and Grandma the Eastern Box Turtles to Tippy the American Toad….to Irie the Red-tailed Hawk, Dottie the Spotted Turtle, Peaches the Honduran Milk Snake, and Gordon the Eastern Garter Snake, Sunny and Luna our Eastern Rat Snakes, Opal the Western Hognose Snake, and of course our beautiful Barred Owl, Ophelia….all of these wonderful animals need care. Our annual budget to feed these hard-working herps, amphibians, and birds of prey..including occasional veterinary care, exceeds $8000.00! Your Give Local Donations with help defray this cost and be very much appreciated!
FINANCIAL AID FOR AREA FAMILIES:
The recession has hit everyone hard! Although White Memorial prides itself on offering affordable children’s programs, some families need a little extra help. Your Give Local donation will be allocated to a special financial aid fund for families most in need. No child should be separated from an extraordinary experience in Nature because of a few dollars. We would appreciate a donation in any amount to add to this fund. The Annual Museum Sleep-In costs $120, Summer Camp: $240.00, After-School Adventures: $48.00, “Sense”-Sational Spring Break Camp: $120.00. Many families would appreciate your help!
RESEARCH:
Research Director, James Fischer is seeking funding for a MOTUS wildlife tracking receiver on our property. The addition of a MOTUS receiver aligns seamlessly with our mission and would provide critical support for local and international wildlife monitoring efforts. MOTUS Wildlife Tracking System’s innovative technology has proven invaluable for understanding the movements and behaviors of migratory species. By joining the MOTUS network, White Memorial can contribute to this global initiative, enhancing the capacity for tracking bird, bat, and insect migrations across the Northeast and beyond. Our location, situated along key migratory routes and featuring a variety of habitats, is ideally suited for a receiver station that would fill an essential gap in the existing network. This project would complement White Memorial’s ongoing initiatives in conservation research and education. The data collected through the MOTUS receiver would be integrated into our educational programming, offering hands-on learning opportunities for students, researchers, and the public. Furthermore, the receiver would facilitate collaborative research with academic institutions, government agencies, and conservation organizations, fostering a broader understanding of species’ ecological needs and the challenges they face. It comes with a hefty price tag of $25,000. A portion of your gifts to Give Local will be allocated to MOTUS.
The Conservation Center is extremely grateful for your enthusiastic support! Thank you!
